How To Turn On Cellular Data On Iphone 6

Is your iPhone cellular data not working, and you are not sure why? Try checking whether your cellular data is on, turn off airplane mode, turn off WiFi calling and also try rebooting your iPhone. We'll be discussing all these solutions and more step-by-step below.

I've been there before with two of my previous devices, iPhone X and iPad Pro 10.5. This article shows you how to fix the problem yourself. It's a no-brainer!

How to Fix your iPhone Cellular Data Not Working Problem

Here is an in-depth guide to all the steps to follow when your cellular data isn't working.

1. Check That Your Cellular Data is On

The first step is to check whether your cellular data is on. To do this:

  • Open the settings app.
  • Go to cellular, then cellular data.
  • Tap on the toggle to turn cellular data on. It is grey when off and green when on.

Alternatively, you can:

  • Simply drag down the top of your screen to open the control center.
  • Search the connection box for the antenna icon. Tap it to turn it on. It turns green when cellular data is on.

To know if your iPhone has made a cellular data connection, check for the LTE, 3G or 4G sign in the status bar at the very top right of your screen.

2. Turn Off Airplane Mode

Next, ensure that Airplane Mode is off. Having Airplane Mode on automatically switches off cellular data, cellular connection, WiFi and Bluetooth. To turn off Airplane Mode:

  • Go to the settings app.
  • Look for the Airplane Mode icon and turn it off.
  • You'll know that it is off when the switch is on the left position and white in color.

Alternatively, you can:

  • Simply drag down the top of your screen to open the control center.
  • Search the connection box for the Airplane Mode icon.
  • If it is orange, then it means Airplane Mode is on.
  • Tap on it so that it turns grey.
  • Turn on cellular data.

If you find that Airplane Mode was off when your iPhone's cellular data wasn't working, try turning it on and off again. This gives it a fresh start just in case the problem was a minor software glitch.

3. Restart iPhone

If the cellular data is still not working, try restarting your iPhone. Wait for around 30 seconds before turning it back on. Your iPhone software or a particular app may have crashed, preventing cellular data from working.

If you're using an iPad (with a home button):

  • Press and hold the top / power button until you see the power-off screen.
  • Slide the icon to the right to initiate a shutdown.

If you're using an iPad (without a home button):

  • Press and hold the top / power button and one of the two volume buttons until you see the power-off screen.
  • Slide the icon to the right to initiate a shutdown.

In both versions, press and hold the top/ power button until the apple logo appears

For iPhone X and later:

  • Press and hold the side/power button and volume down button together until you see the slide to power off icon. Then slide it to initiate a shutdown.

For iPhones 6 to 8 and SE (2nd generation)

  • Press and hold the side/power button until you see the slide to power off icon. Then slide it to initiate a shutdown.

For iPhones 5 and earlier and SE (1st generation)

  • Press and hold the top/power button until you see the slide to power off icon. Then slide it to initiate a shutdown.

For all versions, to turn on the iphone, press and hold the power button until the apple logo appears.

4. Turn Off WiFi Calling

WiFi calling is a good feature, great in fact. It automatically switches a phone call to WiFi network if it detects you can receive a better signal that way. In some cases, however, WiFi calling can interfere with your cellular connection.

Switch off WiFi calling if you are already on a cellular connection as a quick fix.

  • Go to Settings App.
  • Select Phone then WiFi Calling.
  • Toggle it off from green to grey color.

Check whether disabling WiFi calling is the solution to your connection troubles. If not, move on to the next tip on the list.

5. Re-insert your SIM Card

Your SIM card, aside from storing your contact numbers, also allows you to connect to your carrier's network. When your cellular data isn't working, the problem may be with the SIM card. At times, ejecting and re-inserting it may give it a fresh start.

The SIM card tray is found on the side of your iPhone. Since it is small, ejecting SIM cards can be tricky. So, be careful when doing so. Once you have put your SIM card back in place, turn your iPhone back on.

6. Data Roaming Settings

Data roaming comes with a huge bill, and you may not turn it on frequently. Turning on data roaming is a trick that has proven to solve cellular data problems. Just ensure that you turn data roaming back off once you're done.

  • Go to settings.
  • Scroll to cellular and ensure your cellular data is on.
  • Tap Cellular Data Options.
  • Toggle Data Roaming on.

Reboot your iPhone using the steps provided earlier. This trick has worked for some iPhone users.

7. Reset Network Settings

If the problem persists, you may have to reset your network settings. This means that any WiFi network settings will be erased completely. Your data settings will be restored to their default. When you reset network settings, you can also fix any WiFi problems.

  • Go to Settings App.
  • Tap General Menu.
  • Scroll to the Reset Menu option.
  • The 'Reset Network Settings' is found at the middle of the screen immediately you open this menu.
  • You'll be prompted to enter your password for the changes to take place.
  • Tap Reset Network Settings for the reset to begin.

All your cellular data network settings will be reset after this. Check whether the problem has been fixed. If not, move on to the next solution.

8. Look for Carrier Settings Update

Apple and wireless carriers release periodic updates to ensure that your iOS device connects to your carrier's network efficiently. Carrier settings updates normally come with a pop-up notification. Whenever this appears on your iPhone, always tap update.

You can also check for carrier settings update manually.

  • Go to settings.
  • Then General.
  • Then About.

If there is an update available, you will receive a pop-up display within 15 seconds. A pop-up failing to appear means that there is no carrier settings update.

9. Check for iOS Updates

Similar to carrier updates, iOS updates may also have your cellular data working again.

  • Open the settings app.
  • Scroll down to the General Menu option.
  • Tap Software Update and check if there are any.

If there is an update available, download and install it. The process will automatically restart your iPhone. Once it is done, check whether your mobile data is now working.

10. Turn Off VPN

Being subscribed to a VPN on your iPhone may also lead to cellular data problems. Although rare, the VPN may at times, prevent your iPhone from accessing cellular signals. Try disabling your VPN temporarily to see whether it will resolve the connection problem.

11. Perform A Factory Reset

If you have tried everything on this list and your mobile data is still not working, then perform a factory reset as a last resort. This process erases all data from your iPhone to factory defaults. So it's important that you back up your iPhone first before the factory reset.

Here's how to backup your data using iCloud.

  •  Go to settings and tap your name.
  • Select iCloud.
  •  Choose iCloud Backup.
  • Tap Back Up Now to perform a manual backup.

Check out other methods of Backing up your phone's data here.

You can now proceed with your factory reset:

  • Open the settings app.
  • Scroll down to the General Menu option.
  • Tap Erase.
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings to wipe everything in your iPhone.
  • You'll be prompted to enter your passcode.
  • Tap Erase iPhone to begin the process.

12. Contact Your Wireless Carrier

Chances are that at this point, your cellular data is working. If that's not the case, you'll need to contact your wireless carrier provider. Most probably, your cellular data isn't working because they're performing maintenance checks on their cell towers.
